This site is general information, not legal advice
UK Divorces is a directory of family law solicitors, and the guides, calculators and other editorial content here explain how divorce and separation work in general terms. None of it is legal advice. Nothing on this site is a substitute for advice from a qualified solicitor who knows your circumstances, and reading it does not create a solicitor–client relationship with us or with anyone else.
We are not a law firm. We cannot advise you on your own case, we cannot act for you, and we cannot tell you what a court would decide. No one at UK Divorces is your solicitor.
The UK is three legal systems, not one
Divorce, money and children are governed by different law in England and Wales, in Scotland and in Northern Ireland. The grounds for divorce, the timescales, the way property is divided, the terminology and the court procedure all differ. Our guides state which jurisdiction they apply to, and where a topic differs we say so explicitly.
Advice written for one jurisdiction can be actively misleading in another. If you are reading a guide here that is not marked as applying to your jurisdiction, treat it as background only, and take advice from a solicitor qualified in the jurisdiction where your case will be dealt with.
Find a regulated solicitor
Solicitors in England and Wales are regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority; in Scotland by the Law Society of Scotland; in Northern Ireland by the Law Society of Northern Ireland. Each keeps a public register you can search in minutes. Being listed in this directory is not a substitute for checking that register, and it is not a statement that a firm is suitable for your matter.
Not everyone who offers help with separation is a regulated solicitor. Unregulated advisers may be cheaper, but you do not get the protections that come with regulation, including compulsory professional indemnity insurance and access to a formal complaints process.
Listings are not recommendations
Firms appear in this directory because they are real, contactable businesses that work in, or may work in, family law. We label each listing according to how strongly we have been able to verify that, and where we could not confirm something we say so rather than filling the gap.
Inclusion is not an endorsement, a recommendation or a ranking. We do not accept payment for placement, for a higher position or for removal, and we take no referral fee. The order in which firms appear is not a measure of quality.
Accuracy and currency
Divorce law, court fees, statutory rates and procedure change. Our editorial content describes the position as at the date shown on the page, and we revise it when we become aware of a change — but we cannot guarantee that everything on the site is current, complete or free of error, and you should confirm anything that matters with the court service, a government department or a solicitor.
Directory details such as addresses, telephone numbers, opening hours and ratings come from public sources and can change without notice.
Calculators and estimates
Calculators on this site, including the child maintenance calculator, apply published formulas for general guidance only. They run in your browser, their output is an estimate rather than a determination, and only the official child maintenance service can calculate a figure that binds anyone.
If your situation is urgent
If you or a child are in immediate danger, call 999. For non-emergency support, the National Domestic Abuse Helpline is on 0808 2000 247 (freephone, 24 hours) in England and Wales, Scotland's Domestic Abuse and Forced Marriage Helpline is on 0800 027 1234, and Northern Ireland's Domestic and Sexual Abuse Helpline is on 0808 802 1414. Free initial guidance is also available from Citizens Advice in each nation, and our guide to protective orders and getting safe sets out the orders a court can make and how they are obtained.
Reporting a problem
If you run a firm listed here and something is wrong — or you would rather not be listed at all — tell us and we will fix or remove it. Removal requests are actioned without argument. Use the form on any listing page or our contact page; a person reads every submission.
