Divorce law in England and Wales

JD Spicer Zeb Solicitors is based in London, so a case handled here will normally proceed under the law of England and Wales. Since the Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Act 2020 took effect in April 2022, divorce in England and Wales is no-fault. Neither party has to prove wrongdoing, and an application can be made on your own or jointly with your spouse. There is a minimum period of 20 weeks from application to conditional order, then a further 6 weeks before the final order can be made.

Finances are dealt with separately from the divorce itself, and the court has wide discretion to divide assets fairly having regard to the factors in section 25 of the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973. Because that discretion is broad, outcomes vary considerably and early advice on your own circumstances matters.

General information only, and the law changes — check the current position with a solicitor before acting on anything here. Read our fuller guide to divorce in England and Wales.

Checking this firm is properly regulated

Anyone offering legal services in England and Wales as a solicitor must be regulated. Before you instruct JD Spicer Zeb Solicitors — or any firm on this directory — confirm their current standing directly with the Solicitors Regulation Authority. That register is the authoritative source; a listing on this site is not a substitute for it and is not a recommendation.

It is also worth asking who would actually run your case day to day, since the person you first speak to is not always the person who will handle the work.
